Anomaly Detected Hardmode Guide

What hardmode actually changes

Hardmode shipped with the v.101 package (~2025-09-27) alongside Church, leaderboards, and win counts (Updates). The win condition does not change—you still survive until 6 AM—but mistakes cost more. Community consensus is consistent: less forgiveness, and Intruder / Tall Figure pressure arrives earlier, with a widely shared cue that Tall Figure aggression ramps around ~1 AM instead of waiting for a comfortable late-shift lesson.

If standard clears still produce delayed Intruder reports, hardmode will feel “broken.” It usually is not. It is the same Report Tablet loop with a shorter fuse. Watch the embedded hardmode guide for pacing visuals, then use the strategy below.

Prerequisites before you queue hardmode

  • Instant tablet open (R / mobile side button) from Controls
  • Clean Intruder protocol from How to Survive Intruders
  • Named roster literacy on Intruders (Idle/Naked, Geoffrey/Surprise, Tall Figure/H.I.M, Unreportable/Hooded, plus Church threats)
  • At least several clean standard House clears
  • Agreement that nobody is hunting fake codes mid-Vague

Skipping straight to Church hardmode because “win counts look cooler there” is how lobbies farm frustration instead of mornings.

The ~1 AM Tall Figure cue

Players widely treat ~1 AM as the mental alarm for Tall Figure / H.I.M pressure in hardmode. Exact spawn scripting can vary by build, but the useful habit is stable:

  1. Before 1 AM, finish baselines and assign roles—do not tourist the whole map.
  2. Approaching 1 AM, shorten object debates; keep hall sightlines warm.
  3. After 1 AM, treat hallway silhouettes as Intruder-first by default.
  4. If Tall Figure is called, abort prop perfectionism immediately.
  5. After a successful Intruder report, re-check doors and junctions before diving into bedrooms again.

Tall Figure is not the only hostile—Geoffrey / Surprise at doors, Idle / Naked, and Unreportable / Hooded still matter—but Tall Figure is the hardmode anxiety mascot. Learn the full cast on the Intruders page.

Grind House hardmode before Church

On the Tier List, House is the learning map and Church is the density exam. Hardmode multiplies both truths.

Recommended grind path:

  1. Standard House until tablet speed is boring.
  2. House hardmode until 6 AM feels repeatable with the 1 AM Tall Figure mindset.
  3. Standard Office for flashlight/sprint tax (Controls).
  4. Standard Church for wing routing (Church walkthrough).
  5. Only then Church hardmode for leaderboard / win-count ego.

House hardmode teaches earlier pressure without Church’s simultaneous room volume. Use the House walkthrough loop, then add hardmode paranoia at junctions and doors.

Hardmode co-op roles

RoleHardmode emphasis
Intruder leadOwns 1 AM+ hallway discipline; first tablet on Tall Figure
Door watcherEspecially after events that pull eyes indoors (see power restores)
Props leadFreezes object routes the moment Vague hits
Meter callerCalls Mild→Evident out loud—no silent climbing

Duos should soft-main Intruder coverage and accept slower full clears. Solo hardmode is a legitimate drill but brutal when two anomalies spawn far apart—shorten routes.

Decision rules under less forgiveness

  • Ambiguous silhouette: report Intruder, stabilize, debate later.
  • Object anomaly during Tall Figure event: wait.
  • Wrong class on a chair: annoying; wrong delay on Intruder: run-ending.
  • Teammate wants Church hardmode tonight: veto unless House hardmode win rate is already healthy.
  • Power outage mid-hardmode: assign basement runner and door watcher explicitly (Power Outage).

Win counts and leaderboards without ego wipes

v.101 win counts and leaderboards reward consistency. Hardmode clears are impressive; repeated 2 AM Unreportable deaths are not training. Track personal rules:

  • Three House hardmode wipes in a row → drop to standard, fix Intruder latency, requeue.
  • First Church hardmode attempt of the week → require a warm-up House hardmode clear first.
  • Never “one more try” after tilt—tilt is how Hooded Unreportable stories get written.

Common hardmode mistakes

  1. Playing hardmode like standard with louder screaming.
  2. Ignoring the ~1 AM Tall Figure community cue until the silhouette is already in the room.
  3. Taking Church hardmode before House hardmode reps.
  4. Debating Idle vs Distorted mannequin vibes while Evident ticks.
  5. Opening menus for scripts or code myths instead of watching doors (Scripts, Codes).
  6. Forgetting Geoffrey/Surprise door pressure while everyone stares at a Missing cup.

Practice plan (one week)

Night 1–2: House standard + Intruders roster review.
Night 3–4: House hardmode focusing only on pre-1 AM baselines and post-1 AM hallway peeks.
Night 5: Office standard lighting drills.
Night 6: Church standard wing clear.
Night 7: Optional Church hardmode if Night 3–4 felt controlled.

Hardmode is Anomaly Detected with the training wheels kicked off. Keep Intruder-first automatic, respect the ~1 AM Tall Figure cue, grind House hardmode before Church, and 6 AM becomes a skill expression instead of a coin flip.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does hardmode change the win condition?

No. You still survive until 6 AM. Hardmode mainly reduces forgiveness and brings Intruder pressure earlier.

What is the ~1 AM Tall Figure cue?

Community players treat about 1 AM as the hardmode alarm for Tall Figure / H.I.M pressure. Shorten object debates and keep hallway sightlines warm.

Should I play Church hardmode first?

No. Grind House hardmode until clears feel repeatable, then earn Church density on standard before attempting Church hardmode.

When was hardmode added?

Hardmode shipped with the v.101 package around 2025-09-27 along with Church, leaderboards, and win counts.

What should I study besides this guide?

Read the Intruders roster, Tier List map order, and House walkthrough, then practice Power Outage door habits for post-event Tall Figure checks.
